Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine and complex ultrasound and vascular studies independently.
  • Coordinate technical procedures using high-frequency soundwaves for diagnostic purposes.
  • Prepare and maintain the ultrasound equipment, ensuring proper operation for accurate results.
  • Evaluate patient conditions and adjust procedures for emergency or critical needs.
  • Interpret instructions from radiologists and carry out the examination independently.
  • Position patients properly for desired results using ergonomic methods and safe patient handling.
  • Perform diagnostic ultrasound exams for various body regions (e.g., abdomen, neck, chest, pelvis).
  • Assist with intra-operative ultrasound procedures to support interventional radiologists.
  • Maintain patient identity and records in line with VA policies and guidelines.
  • Ensure quality control, image accuracy, and transmission to the PACS network.
  • Maintain a clean, well-stocked, and organized workspace, adhering to hospital standards.
  • Collaborate with radiologists and physicians on significant findings requiring immediate attention.
  • Mentor and train ultrasound students, ensuring adherence to protocols and procedures.
  • Stay updated with new ultrasound advancements and integrate them into daily operations.
  • Participate in quality assurance and improvement activities related to diagnostic imaging.
  • Follow procedures for the cleaning, sterilization, and handling of reusable medical equipment.

Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Minimum 2 years of recent ultrasound technologist experience in a hospital setting, covering inpatient units, ED, and ICU.
  • Certified as a Sonographer through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or an equivalent credentialing body recognized by ARDMS.
  • Current experience in diagnostic radiology and use of ultrasound technology.
  • Experience assisting with surgical and interventional procedures using ultrasound.
  • Strong knowledge of clinical practices in a teaching medical center.

Desired Skills:

  • Proficiency in performing Doppler studies (e.g., Carotid, Venous, Renal, Liver Doppler).
  • Experience with vascular ultrasound techniques, including bypass graft and stent assessments.
  • Ability to conduct intra-operative ultrasound examinations in a sterile surgical environment.
  • Knowledge of ultrasound protocols for critical procedures like Pseudo aneurysm assessments and Aorta endograft leak assessments.
  • Excellent communication skills for patient interaction, explaining procedures, and ensuring comfort.
  • Ability to maintain detailed records and perform administrative tasks related to patient care.

  • Perform housekeeping tasks to maintain a sterile and organized work environment.
  • Work as part of a team to ensure efficient patient care and throughput.
  • Encourage and model professional behavior, teamwork, and effective communication in a healthcare setting.

Work Environment:
The Registered Ultrasound Technologist will work in a dynamic healthcare environment at the VA Medical Center in Arizona, supporting critical diagnostic and interventional procedures. This role includes supporting a variety of services, including the ED, ICU, and inpatient units, and requires a flexible and adaptive approach to meet patient and physician needs
