Key Responsibilities:
  • Clinical Support:
    • Assist registered nurses (RNs) with basic patient care activities such as checking vital signs, assisting with mobility, and providing comfort measures.
    • Prepare patients for examinations and procedures, ensuring they are informed and comfortable.
    • Assist with the collection of patient data and documentation as directed by RNs.
    • Maintain cleanliness and organization of patient care areas, including stocking supplies and preparing treatment rooms.
  • Patient Coordination:
    • Coordinate patient appointments, treatments, and follow-up visits, ensuring that schedules are optimized and that patients receive timely care.
    • Facilitate communication between patients, families, and the healthcare team to ensure that patient needs are met and questions are answered.
    • Assist in coordinating patient admissions, transfers, and discharges, ensuring that all necessary documentation and instructions are provided.
  • Documentation and Record Keeping:
    • Assist with the documentation of patient care activities in the electronic health record (EHR) system, ensuring accuracy and compliance with VA policies.
    • Update and maintain patient records, including demographic information, medical histories, and treatment plans.
    • Assist in the preparation and distribution of reports, summaries, and other documents as required by the nursing staff.
  • Administrative Support:
    • Perform general clerical duties such as filing, faxing, scanning, and copying documents.
    • Manage incoming and outgoing correspondence, including emails, phone calls, and mail, ensuring that messages are relayed to the appropriate staff members.
    • Assist in managing office supplies and equipment, ensuring that necessary materials are available for the nursing staff.
  • Patient Safety and Advocacy:
    • Support the nursing staff in ensuring patient safety by adhering to all safety protocols, including infection control and fall prevention measures.
    • Advocate for patients by addressing their concerns, ensuring their comfort, and maintaining their dignity and privacy.
    • Report any changes in a patient’s condition to the RN or other healthcare providers immediately.
  • Communication and Collaboration:
    • Serve as a liaison between the nursing staff and other departments, facilitating communication and collaboration to enhance patient care.
    • Participate in team meetings and contribute to the development of patient care plans and quality improvement initiatives.
    • Provide support to other members of the healthcare team as needed to ensure smooth and efficient operations.
  • Compliance and Quality Assurance:
    • Adhere to all VA policies, procedures, and regulations, ensuring that all activities are conducted in compliance with federal standards.
    • Participate in quality assurance activities and initiatives aimed at improving patient care and operational efficiency.
    • Maintain confidentiality and security of patient information at all times.
Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent required. Completion of a state-approved nursing assistant or medical assistant training program is preferred.
  • Experience: Previous experience in a healthcare setting, particularly in a supportive role within a nursing or clinical environment, is highly desirable.
  • Skills:
    • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Proficiency in using electronic health record (EHR) systems and other office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
    • Attention to detail and accuracy in data entry and record keeping.
    • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently.
    • Knowledge of medical terminology and VA-specific processes is a plus.
