Key Responsibilities:
- Clinical Support:
- Assist registered nurses (RNs) with basic patient care activities such as checking vital signs, assisting with mobility, and providing comfort measures.
- Prepare patients for examinations and procedures, ensuring they are informed and comfortable.
- Assist with the collection of patient data and documentation as directed by RNs.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of patient care areas, including stocking supplies and preparing treatment rooms.
- Patient Coordination:
- Coordinate patient appointments, treatments, and follow-up visits, ensuring that schedules are optimized and that patients receive timely care.
- Facilitate communication between patients, families, and the healthcare team to ensure that patient needs are met and questions are answered.
- Assist in coordinating patient admissions, transfers, and discharges, ensuring that all necessary documentation and instructions are provided.
- Documentation and Record Keeping:
- Assist with the documentation of patient care activities in the electronic health record (EHR) system, ensuring accuracy and compliance with VA policies.
- Update and maintain patient records, including demographic information, medical histories, and treatment plans.
- Assist in the preparation and distribution of reports, summaries, and other documents as required by the nursing staff.
- Administrative Support:
- Perform general clerical duties such as filing, faxing, scanning, and copying documents.
- Manage incoming and outgoing correspondence, including emails, phone calls, and mail, ensuring that messages are relayed to the appropriate staff members.
- Assist in managing office supplies and equipment, ensuring that necessary materials are available for the nursing staff.
- Patient Safety and Advocacy:
- Support the nursing staff in ensuring patient safety by adhering to all safety protocols, including infection control and fall prevention measures.
- Advocate for patients by addressing their concerns, ensuring their comfort, and maintaining their dignity and privacy.
- Report any changes in a patient’s condition to the RN or other healthcare providers immediately.
- Communication and Collaboration:
- Serve as a liaison between the nursing staff and other departments, facilitating communication and collaboration to enhance patient care.
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to the development of patient care plans and quality improvement initiatives.
- Provide support to other members of the healthcare team as needed to ensure smooth and efficient operations.
- Compliance and Quality Assurance:
- Adhere to all VA policies, procedures, and regulations, ensuring that all activities are conducted in compliance with federal standards.
- Participate in quality assurance activities and initiatives aimed at improving patient care and operational efficiency.
- Maintain confidentiality and security of patient information at all times.
- Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent required. Completion of a state-approved nursing assistant or medical assistant training program is preferred.
- Experience: Previous experience in a healthcare setting, particularly in a supportive role within a nursing or clinical environment, is highly desirable.
- Skills:
- Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in using electronic health record (EHR) systems and other office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- Attention to detail and accuracy in data entry and record keeping.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and VA-specific processes is a plus.
